The process of improving your website’s visibility and maximizing your website’s traffic by ensuring that the site appears high on the list of results returned by a search engine.
As per Moz, SEO is a marketing discipline focused on growing visibility in organic (non-paid) search engine results.

First things first, a good place to begin with would be this video by Matt Cutts where he talks about how search works.

So imagine, you are looking for recommendations for a tour package for your next vacation, and you type your search query into the search engine.
You see a series of results, few ads on top, and few natural search results underneath.
  • So why do certain pages rank higher than others?
  • What can you do to ensure your page ranks higher than others?
These are few of the questions that we will discuss during our journey in search engine optimization.

Search engine optimization strategies can be classified into two categories  - on-page optimization & off-page optimization

On page: Settings you can apply on your website to improve its visibility for search engines and humans alike.
Off page: This refers to activities carried outside of your website.

On page SEO techniques include page quality, page structure, URL structure, page performance, whereas off-page SEO techniques include backlinks, social media optimization amongst others.

That’s all for an introduction to Search Engine Optimization. Watch out for the next topic “Why is Search Engine Optimization Important” in my next post!
